Do you remember Skeletor from He-man and the Masters of the Universe? I loved watching the cartoon and collecting the Mattel He-man figures.

I was fortunate enough to have a couple different skeletor figures. I had the original figure and the battle-armored Skeletor that you could flick in the chest and it would change to take damage.

Skeletor – He-man and the Masters of the Universe

As for the cartoon I liked watching He-man but I really could’t stand his hair so I really haven’t attempted to draw him. If I ever did I would probably change his hair up a bit. Perhaps I would use the more the modern He-man hair style found in the new cartoon. The skulls and the monsters always appealed to me more as I had a father who tended to draw these himself. He also had many tattoos of skulls and when I was a kid I would emulate his tattoo drawing style so Skeletor was definitely the way to go for me.

When I created the Skeletor I started by illustrating him in pen and ink on Bristol board and I scanned the illustration into Adobe Photoshop for some color.

I’ve been asked a few times about his feet so I thought I would note the modern Skeletor images and figures seem to have more human-like feet with five toes. My figures had boots with three toes so I am not sure if Skeletor has just evolved since the old-days or if it is simply artistic license but I prefered to illustrate his feet after the old style.

My daughter as She-Hulk comic Illustration https://halegrafx.com/comic-art/my-daughter-as-she-hulk-comic-illustration/ https://halegrafx.com/comic-art/my-daughter-as-she-hulk-comic-illustration/#comments Wed, 16 May 2012 22:52:29 +0000 http://halegrafx.com/?p=642 I really enjoy the process of creating my illustrations. Most of the time after completing a drawing I usually tire of looking at it for too long and am ready to start the creative process again. I am fond of this She-hulk illustration however, and like to look back at it as it contains two of my favorite people, my daughters, as well as some of my favorite subjects, comic art and Hulk!

My older daughter is a fan of the Incredible Hulk and She-Hulk and enjoys watching the old TV shows as well as looking at comic books and figures with me. I did this piece for her as well as a homage to She-hulk. The illustration is based on the cover of the first Marvel Comics issue of She-Hulk.

In the illustration my older daughter is changing into a mini She-Hulk and I have my younger daughter as one of the bystanders in the background in shock as she changes.

For this She-hulk illustration I worked from photos that I have of my daughters. I had them pose for some pictures but found out very quickly with my younger daughter that getting her to pose was difficult. It was hard to get her to do the right poses and doing candid shots became the best route. It just so happened she looked up in an expression of shock and I was able that get this great pic of her that worked for the background.

Using the photos, I first draw ink illustrations and then scan them into Adobe Photoshop for adding the color. While there are many other illustations I put away, sell as products, do for freelance or any other kind of scenario this is one particular piece I don’t mind having on my wall.

Here’s the original She-hulk comic cover for reference…

The Incredible Hulk in darkness Illustration https://halegrafx.com/comic-art/the-incredible-hulk-in-darkness-illustration/ https://halegrafx.com/comic-art/the-incredible-hulk-in-darkness-illustration/#comments Mon, 07 May 2012 18:26:26 +0000 http://halegrafx.com/?p=27 I created this piece as some fan art of my favorite comic book character, The Incredible Hulk. I did this a few years back but I thought I would share the artwork. It just so happens that the new Avengers movie is out at the same time!

I’ve loved drawing comic art since I was a kid. This illustration was primarly pens and sharpies on bristol board and then I scanned and colored in Photoshop. I liked the way the Incredible Hulk came out and I decided some day that I would like to come up with some similar versions that I could sell without copyright infringement.

While I do get commissions to do comic characters I wanted something that I could get repeat sales on like I do with my other products in my Zazzle shop so below I created a variation called the dark rage.

I don’t believe there is a purple hulk and while they’ve created various other incarnations of the Incredible Hulk including gray, blue, and red hulk I haven’t seen a purple one yet. So, as you can see below I made Hulk purple and gave this new dark hulk-like creature pointy ears and sharp teeth. In this variation I made it look more like a titanic monster rather than the Incredible Hulk. I was successfully able to make a few sales before Zazzle pulled this off of their site. They pulled it down because they believed it looked too much like the Incredible Hulk. Oh well, it was a fun piece of art and now Zazzle has a ton of really cool customizable Hulk art available!
